What is High Blood Pressure?

High blood pressure (also called hypertension) occurs when your blood moves through your arteries at a higher pressure than normal. Many different things can cause high blood pressure. If your blood pressure gets too high or stays high for a long time, it can cause health problems.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, claiming the lives of nearly 865,000 Americans every year. Many people are unaware that, to a large extent, the disease is both modifiable and preventable. Knowing your risk profile will enable you to take control of your health and provide you with the best defense against cardiovascular disease.
